Best Horses of the Decade 1970-1979 is the second book in a series of six, collectively covering 1960 to 2019. Each volume covers the racing and stud careers of the very best horses of that decade; illustrated with photographs sourced from the author's own extensive library and from those of other respected racing professionals. Best Horses of the Decade 1970-1979 was published in 2016. Best Horses of the Decade 1980 - 1989 was published in October 2017 and Best Horses of the Decade 1990 - 1999 will be published in late 2018. Due to the difficulty involved in sourcing photographs from the sixties, that decade will be covered last - to give John time to hunt down as many good photographs as possible.
These books are not simply a record of facts and photographs, however. John writes from his own unique perspective, drawing from experience gained through a lifetime in the company of some of the finest racehorses and the people who strive to bring out the best in them.
Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef and Nijinsky - three of the greatest Thoroughbreds of the twentieth century to grace the racecourses of Europe during the decade of the 1970’s, along with over 100 other greats are comprehensively profiled in Best Horses of the Decade 1970-1979. This substantial well-indexed book recalls these legendary racehorses whose distinguished careers on the track and/or at stud causes them to be remembered and talked about by horseracing enthusiasts more than thirty-five years after the last of them passed the winning post for the final time.
Read about the classic winners: Nijinsky, Roberto, Grundy, The Minstrel, Shirley Heights, Troy, Brigadier Gerard, High Top, Nonoalco, Bolkonski, Wollow, Tap On Wood, Humble Duty, Altesse Royale, Flying Water, Lupe, Pawneese, Fair Salinia, Athens Wood, Bustino, Bruni and Crow. Her Majesty the Queen’s best horses of the era, Highclere and Dunfermline are featured, along with Sir Peter O’Sullevan’s popular hurdler, Attivo. All the Arc de Triomphe winners of the decade, Sassafras, Mill Reef, San San, Allez France, Rheingold, Star Appeal, Ivanjica, Alleged and Three Troikas are here, and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes heroes Dahlia, Pawneese and Ile de Bourbon.
The flying sprinters Deep Diver, Huntercombe, Amber Rama, Lochnager and Cawston's Pride are not forgotten, nor the brilliant stayers Sagaro, Buckskin and Rock Roi.
The author was personally involved with two of the horses, Buckskin and Orange Bay. John worked for Peter Walwyn at Seven Barrows and Henry Cecil at Warren Place when all of the others featured in Best Horses of the Decade 1970-1979 were in training. His personal recollections of these times will touch the hearts of all lovers of great racehorses.
