Best Horses of the Decade 1980-1989 is the third book in a series of six, collectively covering 1960 to 2019. Each volume covers the racing and stud careers of the very best horses of that decade; illustrated with photographs sourced from the author's own extensive library and from those of other respected racing professionals. Best Horses of the Decade 1970-1979 was published in 2016. Best Horses of the Decade 1990 - 1999 will be published in 2018. Due to the difficulty involved in sourcing photographs from the sixties, that decade will be covered last - to give John time to hunt down as many as possible.
These books are not simply a record of facts and photographs, however. John writes from his own unique perspective, drawing from experience gained through a lifetime in the company of some of the finest racehorses and the people who strive to bring out the best in them. This book has over 350 colour photographs - many of which have not been published before. This volume includes contributions from Ian Balding and Sir Mark Prescott as well as some photographs by the award-winning racing photographer Ed Byrne.
Ninety horses are comprehensively profiled and indexed over 319 pages including middle-distance greats - Dancing Brave and Shergar; milers- Zilzal and El Gran Senor; sprinters - Moorestyle and Habibti; great stayers - Le Moss and Ardross and, phenomenal sires - Sadler's Wells and Danehill. Also profiled is Piaffer - the last good horse John looked after during his time in racing stables. Although he doesn't merit inclusion on his racing performances, Piaffer was included under the special qualification of "author's indulgence" - not least for being the only horse who tried to kill John - twice!
